A day after seven mayors asked U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to end the American Airlines-US Airways lawsuit, 26 officials from various chambers of commerce and business groups sent their own letter asking Holder to settle the case and let the merger proceed.

Among the signers were Dallas Regional Council president and CEO James C. Oberwetter, Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Bill Thornton and Fort Worth Metropolitan Black Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Devoyd Jennings.

“We support this combination because the new American will be a better airline with a solid financial foundation. As a result, the new American will be able to compete effectively with Delta, United, Southwest, and the ever-increasing number of smaller carriers, and the business community will have a more efficient and dependable partner for air transportation needs,” the letter said.

“More competition in the airline industry will help everyone, even as the new American delivers greater benefits to consumers, businesses, labor, and the local communities it serves,” it added.

Other signers came from Virginia, Fairfax County, Va., the District of Columbia, New York, Tulsa, Arizona and Phoenix, Los Angeles, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Miami, Missouri and six chambers from the Philadelphia area.

Keep reading for the letter.
